The professional way is to use wire wool with acetone. Very effective but you need lots of ventilation and absolutely no flames!!
Try using paint/varnish remover, fine steel wool, then sand with fine grain sandpaper. Takes abit of elbow grease to strip furniture, doors, etc...but the end result is worth it.
Varnish is easy to remove w/ any decent paint stripper.
Before you go crazy w/ a full stripping, might try a finish restorer kit like Formbys.
It reduces & cleans up the old finish.
Refinishing may not be necessary.
Works very well for an over the counter product.
Best regards
Use paint stripper.
Varnish remover and sanding. Or acetate and allow it to sit for a few hours and then sand.
Use Strip-Eze ans a wire brush to strip and lots of water for clean up. Be Very Careful. All strippers are extremely dangerous to use.
