Tile and texture a brick fire place>??
Question:i want to tile my fathers firplace for him.. give him a more updated look to his house..Single man, who doesnt change anything and knows nothing about decorating.. No offense.. He will be out on vacation soon and i would like to do this while he is gone for a week. I was thinking of tiling the entire thing but that would be a bit much dont you think?? So maybe tile the bottom half and texture the top?? I just dont know how to do it.. Are there any special types of tile? How do i stick it ?? I know i need a smooth surface.. what about the mantle? Is this too much for me to do?? I have enclosed some pictures so you can get an idea of what it looks like.. Its verry tall and has a huge brick bottom which you can see in the photos. Its ugly and he thinks its great to take pics infront of and as you can see its hidious... I recently panted the walls a light tan which brightened it up and made it look better but ugh...

I had the same problem. I put sheetrock above the mantle and tile below the mantle. It looks great. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Much better than the ugly brick underneath.
Sounds to me like this is going to turn into a disaster.
There's no link to pictures. Is this real brick or the fake crap? If its fake, chisel it off and do any thing you like. If its real, I say leave it. Its such a shame to see painted brick homes and chimneys, etc. People spend tons to bring back brick and stone. A new mantle and mirror or painting might do wonders.
It also sounds like you plan to do this "for" him without his knowing. I'd be pissed.
Now I see the links. Its already painted, damn.
Why don't you strip it while he's away instead?
