Drilling into a chimney breast (brick) I feel I have hit something metal. What could it be?
Question:Any ideas how I can get around it to hand a small (26") TV? I can't tell how big the obstruction might be or whether I can drill into it.
Using a masonry drill bit with a hammer action drill. Obstruction definitely metal sounding. Thanks.

It could be an RSJ ( a steel girder supporting the chimney breast. If it is a newish house,no more than 30 years old it could be the pre cast concrete flue blocks. When you get to the steel try using a drill bit for steel to see if any metal bits come out.Good luck.
It could be the Iron in the re enforced concrete..
drill somewhere else, the tv will hide it
May be steel reinforcement within. If you want to install anchors to hang a TV, you don't need to drill very deep. I would not cut through reinforcement.
So thats what happened to my metal frisby.
Its possibly a steel supporting joist, best to seek a professional opinion before going ahead with your tools!
Get an expert to look at it. It might be the back boiler of your neighbour's fire! or even worse, a gas pipe!
Metal Flue lining from a central heating system. DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT drill through it !!!
it could be your hot water boiler
Mihgt be an old back boiler plate ..you can get an instrument that tells you whats behind the plaster before drilling,,,,in D,I,Y,,,shop,,,
It's the metal fire lining they put up before the brick. You could drill into it, but than you would have a hole all the way through. It might affect the draw of the fire. Depends on how big a hole you want to make. If it's real small, I say go for it. Bye
could it be the metal fireplace? or brick ties.
its the metal flue dont drill into it or u will find that smoke will come into your house dont drill right through the bricks just drill alittle in about 50mills and then hang your tv onto the chimney
try drilling higher or lower but if you hit metal again stop and choose another wall or change your TV (KIDDING)
