Will clay work in a koi pond?
Question:I want to make a loi pond in my back yard but I don't wan't to to use a tarp for the bottom. I read somewhere that you can dig out the pond and then line it with clay to keep the water from seeping into the earth. I was wondering if this works, and if it does, what kind of clay to use.

It does work but it isn't quite as simple as some people would have you believe. Any clay should work just fine. What you have to do is dig it out, Then line with a mixture of clay and water.When that is done,let it sit for about a week or so, so the water you added to the clay can evaporate. If it even looks like rain while the clay is sitting, put some water-resistant cloth completely over the future pond.If it does rain, add another week onto the time for the clay to set-up. When the clay has solidified, put water into the "Almost There Now, "pond to about one quarter of the ponds capacity.Wait at least three days and add another quarter. Same deal for the remaining half. Watch it for water droppage for a week. No Leak? Great! Put in your plants, allow them a couple of days to settle in and then (Phew,Finally) put in your koi.
Look online for the clay puddled pond, there are a number of sites which explain the construction of clay ponds.
You can buy those black plastic formed pools at the home store too-check into that. Also a wire mesh in bottom of dug our hole and cement would do you good. You could perhaps use clay-but why chance losing your time, work and koi fish if it did seep?
