I need help removing paint. I have a 20-30 year old day bed.?
Question:It has several layers of paint on it from all kinds of redecorating through the years. I want to remove all the paint and just paint it white again.
Whats the best way to remove the paint, and the cheapest? Right now I don't have money for sand blasting or anything like that.
I was told heat would help, but I'm not sitting outside with a blowdryer peeling paint off with a butter knife. Nor do I want to spend forever sanding it down by hand.
Help?
Answers:
If you are willing to sit outside for a few sessions of 30 minutes each to apply some paint stripper, then get a paint brush and 3M paint stripper from your local hardware store. The 3M is odorless and can be applied with gloves. Since you have multiple coats, you will need to apply it, let it sit for a few hours, apply another coat and etc. It could easily turn into a 1/2 to full day job to get all the paint off.
Total cost: $4 for the paint brush and $15 for the paint stripper.
hardware stores sell a heat gun for around $25.00 ... It gets very hot and will burn you. they can actually light a cigarette, so be very careful if you decide to get one.
here is the easiest and the cheapest way for you to repaint this yourself...
stripping all the old paint is a big mess, dont even go there.
get some 220 sand paper and only sand where there are rough edges.
repaint with an oil based paint.
Sound like your not willing to do the work. Do the job right or not at all. Stripping is a lot of work.
Just paint it again.
If you know someone with a home powerwasher ,just coat it with one of the new environmentally safe strippers available at any lowe's or hardware chain store and after it sits for the prescribed time just power wash off the paint, it should come off to bare wood .
Well, You just said you didn't want to do the two things that are the best way of stripping it. If the paint is not chipping off, than lightley sand it, prime it ,than paint over it! Bye
A can of Superstrip is your best bet. (Although, I've had sanblasting done to objects of that size and only been charged $20 or so.) Check with a local car repair shop. See what they'd charge you. A lot quicker and cleaner than doing it yourself.
