What can I put on my unfinished stair case?

Question:I have replaced my whole staircase in oak and I want to know what is best to put on it, stain, shellac, etc..?
what other alternatives do I have?

Answers:
Why use oak if you are just going to stain it? Buy the most expensive finish you can find and apply it according to the directions. Or you can just carpet the whole thing.

varathane, I don't know about you but I like woods natural beauty. so I don't like to use stain, I like to put a clear protective coat that's really easy to maintain once you've got it right. The biggest problem with varathane and a wood floor is having a big enough sander to get that smooth glossy look.
Real oak is very expensive. I would leave the wood as the natural color and use a marine varnish to add to the wood for protection. The wood will turn darker with age anyway.
The marine varnish is what is used on boats to float and protect from damages on the decks. I would invest a bit more pocket change and seek a professional to do it or look up the info on how to apply the product yourself. 2-3 coats would do. Will have no scratches, water resistant, and lots of enjoyment.
