What's the best way to join a 2 by 4 together end to end?

Answers:
Cut a half lap in each of the pieces to be joined. Fit and fasten pieces and cover with fishplates on either side of the joint. Top and bottom as well if you want.

They have metal plates at most hardwares stores. If you ask a clrek they would be able to tell you which ones would work best for the particular type of wood and job you are doing.
tounge and groove...its a metal piece that will connect the two piece together. any home improvement store should carry it in the size of wood you need.
its the disassembly ! ok simple sister another 2x4 over the joint 2' in each direction 4' total lengh using 2"1/2 inch screws you don't say what your using this for it makes a big differance to the answer
