Concrete grinding?

Question:I have a concrete slab, and only part of it is bad (let's say about 2' x 4'), it's kind of weak and crumbles.

I've heard the best thing is to use a grinder to remove the weak concrete, and then some kind of concrete repair mix to fill it in.

Does this sound right to you? Please include SPECIFICS on what kind of grinder to use?? And which type of mix is best, I see Quikrete makes a few different formulas that sound like they'd work.

This is in Ohio, so it will be subject to freeze/thaw cycles.

Thanks.

Answers:
check with some of your local concrete companies.
i am in California so i wouldn't be much help with doing the job, but i work for a company that sells concrete pumps, saws, diamond blades, GRINDERS, etc.
a concrete grinder is also called a surface grinder.
they are sort of a specialized machine about as big as a rototiller.
check with your local RENTAL outlets and see if they offer SCARIFIERS for rent.
otherwise you could get a DIAMOND CUP WHEEL for your angle grinder if the job is small enough

Rent a concrete saw and cut the section that is bad and remove it. If it is on an outside edge form up the edge and pour new. Patching in my experience doesn't seem to work well. Not sure about using Quikrete we always have the local concrete company come pour ours then we finish it.
You don't need to sand the concrete. Wash with a high powered sprayer to remove all loose or chipped particals. Let dry then repair.
I pour concrete in illinois and with the freeze thaw cycles patches never seem to hold up. I would saw it out and pour new. Something that small you can handle yourself. Rent a saw with a diamond blade saw it out and mix some bag mix 4000 lb or more. Once you pour it back try and keep the salt off it in the winter time It really messes up concrete. They sell a sealer now that is supposed to resist salt damage but I have never used it. Might be something to check out. Your local concrete and massonry supplier probably rents saws and would have the sealer too good luck
