I installed my own wainscoting in my house it is pretty reasonably priced at the home depot.I used a skill saw mitersaw hammer and nailset some liquid nails.Check around for different materials you can even do wainscoting in tile but that would probably be the most expensive.I have installed many thousands of feet of tile wainscoting in mostly commercial restrooms but there are many different types of tiles that would look awesum in a residencial application.

mostly you used miter saw to cut the molding and used glue or nail gun to fasten them to the wall.
