I want to darken a flatpack chest which is made from a combination of wood and Melomine faced hard board?

Use a melamine primer, then ronseal paint and grain. I've done this on an old bedside cabinet and there's no scuffing, scratches or peeling after 5 years of use!

I don't think you can as the melamine is designed to be wiped clean.
It will be very difficult to get a key for the stain to stick to.
