How should I remove a 1x6 nailed flat to the outside of my house?

Question:The bottom plank of a window frame on the outside of my house has rotted, it is nailed flat against the house. How should I remove it to put a new one in its place. It is a 1x6 that is about 3 ft long, with standard looking flatheaded nails.

Answers:
My guess is that have more damage that just what is obvious from the outside. I would have a pro take a look and give you an estimate to repair.

you didn't say if it was overlapped by surrounding materials - if not use a drill to remove the head off of the nails and then a punch to drive them through the board ( if soft wood or rotten skip the drill ) less damage than pulling them

if it is overlapped then you have to remove everything or cut around it
You could use a flat bar or pry bar to remove the board. placing a piece of scrap wood under the bar as you pry (so the bar pushes against the scrap wood, not the siding) will give you more leverage and protect the siding.

Another option is using a sawzall, cutting between the board and the house...
If you can just remove the nails with a claw hammer, that's the simplest method. If you can't get at them, pry the board off with a framing hammer or pry bar. Place a sacrificial piece of wood between the tool and the wall to rock the base of the hammer or pry bar against. This way you won't damage any of the wood that you want to keep.
Just lever it off with a hammer and pry bar.
