Looking for a SUPER POWERFUL shop vac, for a decent price. What should I look for?
Question:So I'm really tired of underpowered vaccum cleaners, and I an looking to get one of the strongest vaccums I can find. Although I don't really want to spend more than $100.
I've seen alot of shop vacs out there, rated anywhere from 2hp to 6.5 hp. all the 5 and 6.5 hp ones are huge though. Are they actually considerably more powerful than the more reasonable sized 3 and 4 hp ones?
Basically, I really don't want to spend more than around $100 tops, less would be better, and I'm just trying to find a extremely powerful vac. Hopefully one that practically sucks the whole carpet up.

RIDGID from home depot 6hp 13gal for around $70. sucks the bejesus outta dust. Good filter life and replacements are about $15
Try Sears or Lowe's
I have a Ridgid Wet/Dry Vac from good ol Home depot, 6hp, 12 gal for around $50-$60. It has many attachments and it really sucks. They have several different sizes, and they all are backed by a lifetime warranty. BUY ONE!!
I won't do your shopping for you to keep you under a hundred bucks, but I can answer your question...
Horsepower of the motor is an ABSOLUTE factor in purchasing a shop vac.
Imagine a '73 Ford Pinto 4 cylinder up against a '69 Dodge Challenger with a 426 HEMI.. They just don't compare.
Look for one that has "Wet/Dry" capability... You'll be glad you did down the road.
Here is a site that might help you figure out what you want:

I have a Rigid 6.5 Hp 16 Gallon wet/dry vac that I purchased from Home Depot... works exceptionally well, picks up dust, water, dirt, nails, wood... really anything it can fit down the hose. You should be able to find a comparable model at the H.D. for $100 or less depending on how heavy duty your needs are. Although kind of cumbersome, it rolls nicely on casters comes with a complete array of attachments. Filters last for a while and are not terribly expensive to replace.
I have to agree with most of the people here. I have a Rigid shop vac that i bought about a year ago. It was on sale and came with all accessories and a big mouth tool bag for about $75.00. you could also try epinions.com. They have lots of consumer opinions and pricing on just about everything you could buy.
Lowes carries a 5.5 hp 5gal shop-vac brand that i love has a 20 ft cord very portable and powerful about $80
Look into an industrial equipment supplier like Graingers online.
Probably best place to find the monsters used on construction sites
