You might try mechanical fingers; usually these are less expensive than plumber's snakes or augers, best I recall.
Here's a site that illustrates the gadget I talking about. I'm only providing the site to illustrate the gadget. I've bought the 24" size with 3 grab prongs for less than $2.

You might also try a coat hanger hook, the wood puzzle piece should float back into the bowl if you dislodge it; also get a toilet diagram from some DIY book to see what your confronting in the toilet trap pathway. (It's an "S" shape of sorts.)
Buy one of these. You will need it with kids.

rubber gloves and just reach in
Bend over and pull it out ! And then wash your hands ! It's just a toilet, not a snake pit !
you can buy a snake or you could try to grab it with a wire coat hanger
I like Edumaca's suggestion, and the only other best way is pull the toilet and go in from the bottom. The toilet is designed with its own internal P TRAP system, and I can't imagine a puzzle piece doing what you suggest, by itself, unless of course it's a childs beginner puzzle piece larger than the opening within the toilet. I have to imagine it has helped collect other debris by now.

Use a snake. Don't use your hand, bc what if it gets stuck in there!?
Get another wax ring at a hardware store. Pull the toilet and back flush it with water and it should come out. good luck
