Has anyone had experience with a do it yourself move (to another city) using a "pod."?
Question:I am referring to the system where you pay a company, they drop off a "pod" (which is like a metal freight container) and you do the packing yourself. The co. then comes by when you call them after a couple of days and a truck with a crane picks up the pod and drives it to your new home. You then unload the pod yourself. How was your experience? Any suggestions? Thanks.

We used it when we moved 2 years ago. It was awesome. We had it delivered 2 weeks before we moved (and had it for 2 weeks after we moved). We used the Pod solely for our boxes and smaller pieces. By doing this, we could load it at our own pace. We could pack a couple of boxes, take them out to the pod and not have tons of boxes around our house. It really made it a much less stressful environment. We then hired movers for our big furniture pieces.
Once we moved, we were able to get a couple of boxes out of the pod, unpack and leave everything else in the pod. Our house wasn't crammed with unopened boxes. We just unpacked a few boxes, set up where that stuff went and then went out for more boxes. Our new house stayed neat and clean. We were able to take our time unpacking and didn't have to stare at all these boxes reminding us of how much work we had to do. LOL If/when we move again, we'll definitely be using the PODS again. Besides, it was pretty reasonable cost wise.

It is the most cost effective method of moving today.
I suggest planing on placing the furniture on the bottom, the light stuff on top, and the breakables surrounded by soft things. It sounds simple, but it is not. Designate one person as the main "pod packer" Mark all boxes with contents, and suggested room.
For boxes, hit WalMart in the late evenings. If you call ahead, they will tell you when to come by. For books, I suggest the 3 gallon water boxes. Just big enough to pack full and not be too heavy. They also stack nice Buy several tape guns, and the cheap $1 tape rolls. 12 should do for an average size house.
My husband and I used PODS to move from PA to NC. They were nice, because you could pack at your own pace, and all that. but if you do NOT pack the furniture PERFECTLY!! and use ALOT of blankets/padding on the furniture... it will get damaged! almost all of our wooden furniture has scratches and dings in it, so if you go with it... I HIGHLY recommend using ALOT of padding on the furniture and plan out how you are going to pack everything up so you avoid that!!

On a scale of 1-10 they are a 15. Pods are there in more than enought ime to fill them and they can be delivered at a time specified by you and left for as long as you need them so you dont have to rush if you dont want to.. There awesome!!!
