How would you clean rust off of a skeleton key?

Question:

Answers:
Use a wire brush, if you have a vice. grip it tightly, and do one end at a time, then turn it round and do the other end. The wires gets into places that are difficult to reach by hand, when finished, use a metal polish with the brush and finish off with a dry clothe. Have a good day.

Put the key in a glass then pour coca cola into the glass covering the key. Go to bed. When you wake up Voile!
Not a cola substitute but good ol fashioned name brand Coca Cola.
Possession of a skeleton key can be an offense in some states.

Any rusty object can be cleaned by placing in a glass of cola for a few days, top brands work better, for severe rusting it could take a month or so to get the rust off.
rust remover
WD-40 and wire brush or Naval Jelly (very corrosive stuff but works great. Use protective gloves and eye protection!!)
Soak in coca cola overnight
Yeh, either a can or coca cola ar place the key in a glass of 'easy off bam' its a stain remover that removes rust and dirt.
cover a container with aluminium foil, boil the jug add to dish and a couple tablespoons bicarb soda, put it key and will clean up,works for jewellry too
Old fashioned steel wool certainly beats a wire brush on objects as small as a skeleton key. Use either the coke system, wd-40 or any rust remover with the steel wool.
There is a product called Ospho. It converts rust to a white powder that can be brushed off
I would spray it with WD40 and let it sit, then just rub what I could off.Be careful if the rust went thru the key,it may break off in the lock..
A wire brush mounted on a bench grinder. Coke may sound like more fun, but if you want to get this done in a hurry, just brush it.

Incidently, what most people call a skeleton key is really a bit key, with cuts in it to bypass the obtacles in a specific lock. A true skeleton key is a bit key with excess metel removed from the bit in the hope that it will operate a variety of locks. About 5 patterns will work most old fashioned warded locks. Skeleton keys can be bought at any good hardware store. The security offered by those old fashioned locks is minimal, anyway. That's why they are obsolete.
