Do you need to sand down wood before varnishing?

Question:I have to varnish the underside of my grans roof ,its a new roof (about 4mths old ),can I just varnish it ,or do I have to sand it down beforehand? Should I put more than 1 coat on ?

Answers:
If you're trying to do a good job, you need to sand before and between coats. Do at least two coats with a light sanding with a fine sand paper to smooth things out. Try using a verathane (sp?) instead of a varnish.

just give it a quick rub with some sand paper before hand, See how the first coat looks, if not give it a second coat, as the first coat might just soak right into the wood.
Use an exterior varnish, i.e. spar varnish. Sanding will depend only on how you want it to look. I wouldn't.
Its always`s worth sanding down it gives the varnish a better finish
Fine sand paper should do the trick
if it is a roof just varnish.
Yeah sand it down or you will see every little deformity in the wood.
Personally, I would just paster it will loads of varnish because I'm lazy, but your supposed to varnish it.
never heard of varnishing the roof timbers in my life we thought roofers used treated wood good luck with this awful task
It pays to sand it as after 4 months there will be a build up of chemicals in the air. A light sanding is all it needs.
Most varnishes require 2 coats at least, and require a sanding between coats.
