What is the difference between white spirit and turpentine substitute?

Question:They seem to do the same job, and in Homebase at least cost the same. How do they differ?

Answers:
Basically Turpentine is a product obtained by the distillation of pine balsam.
Where as White spirit is a derivative of kerosene, which in turn is obtained by the distillation of crude oil.

Turps has a strange aftertaste
Not quite familiar with either term. Mineral Spirits are a light, clear petroleum based solvent used to clean up brushes and to thin oil-based paint. Turpentine is a solvent made from pine sap that isn't used much any more. It seems to leave a sticky residue when cleaning brushes, for instance. Lately, it mostly seems to be used to thin artist's oil paint.
