I just bought a 100 year old house in which the top window is painted shut. Any tricks to unstick the window?

Are you sure the top window opens. Some older homes didn't have double hung windows. Look for the second slide for the window. If its just paint, use a putty knife and a sharp regular knife. Cut the paint on the inside and the out side. bump the window UP with a rubber mallet. Then blump down. Also do NOT sand as the paint may contain lead.

Thin chisel and a very gentle touch with a hammer around the paint line.
I'd try a heat gun. Be careful, keep the heat on the wood and off the glass. Heat guns +glass=shatter
you'll have to use a utility knife and CAREFULLY and with gloves; cut along the painted edge, inside and perhaps out. The window will also probably have rotted cotton ropes to the 2 counter weights. Consider replacing when you get it open. Be careful. if glass is original you don't want to break it, hard to match. Check the putty around glass for replace too.
use a sharp knife and open the seams. it will not come easily. work at it.
You should remove the sash altogether. To do so, remove the stop that holds the sash in place. Cut along the stop and the trim with a utility knife, then use a stiff putty knife to pry the stop away. This will also expose the counterweight. At this point, the sash should come out, but it may need a little persuasion from a block of wood and a mallet.

With the sash out, you can scrape, sand and repaint. You might also want to reglaze. You should definitely replace the sash cord.
Also check for a spring pin stop. These are to keep a window locked in place in different holes in the sash. If painted or rusted in place, all the chipping and cutting won't do you any good. The window frame will have to be taken right out of the sash.
ok your best bet is to use a utility knife which is a razor knife run along paint stick and use a new blade rock window gently to loosen this couldhave been prevented if you checked these things before buying you would not be the one with this grief
