How do you make an antique looking picture frame?

Question:It should almost look like the paint is old and crackling!!

Answers:
I did a painted kitchen like this when i was an apprentice. There is a product that you can get called crackle medium.

1. apply a water based sealer and let it dry.
2. apply the underneath paint finish (acrylic) and let dry for about 20 minutes
3. apply the crackle medium,
4. apply another contrasting acrylic colour, light over dark for a much better effect, and it will instantly give you the effect you are looking for.

Buy a cheap frame and put it in storage for a hundred years. That should do the trick. No, just kidding. But im interested to know myself so cheers for asking the question.

They have a crackle paint at hardware stores that makes things look older. Check that out.

a substitute for the crackle medium is good ole Elmer's Glue. After you've applied the base color, thin some elmer's glue w/water and apply it with a brush. Before it completely dries but after it's tacky to the touch, apply the top coat. As the paint/glue dries it will crack. The thicker the glue/water mixture, the longer it takes to dry but the bigger the cracks will be.

Another cool finish is to apply a base coat/color. Then selectively apply furniture wax to areas that you want to look worn - edges/corners/ places where finish would wear off over time. Then apply your final color - over the wax and base coat - and let it dry. Go over the waxed areas lightly with steel wool or very fine sand paper. the top coat in those areas will come off, exposing the base color - or underlying wood if you didn't use a base coat.

finish off with some furniture wax, letting it accumulate and remain in the crannies...
