How long does semi-transparent stain last before it needs to be re-stained, on exterior wood?

Question:We are considering staining wood shingles, and are wondering how often it needs to be re-done.

Also, is the cost less than paint, since it must be re-done more often?

Can you paint over stain later on, if both products are water-based?

Answers:
Does not last long, 1yr maybe 2, due to sun bleaching. Cost of different materials I don't know, I don't know you prices. You can paint over but pressure wash first. Source 25 years painting. Also a good reverence would be a paint store, they will help, do not ask from home depot or Lowe's.
