My toilet will run about every 2 minutes or so like its filling up with water?

Question:How do i fix my toilet from running

Answers:
Check to see if the "flapper" at the bottom letting water into the bowl is a little loose or leaking; if a little water is trickling out, at some point, the ballcock drops below the full level and the tank refills.

You can turn the knob down below so the water is off, and when you need to flush, turn the water back on. You will need to replace a part in the tank.
Sounds like you have an issue with the seal. Basically the ball that lifts when you flush your toliet. You can go to a hardware store and purchase a new one (typically $5-$10) which comes with sealant as well as intructions on how to install it.
check the control valve... it may only need minor adjusting or simply flexing (not flushing)
Open up the top of the toilet, you will see a rubber thing covering a hole with a chain attached to it. Chances are the chain is too tight and it is allowing the water to leak down the drain. What you need to do is remove the chain, give it a little slack then re-attach it so that it is no longer lifting up on the rubber cover, but instead only lifts up when you push the handle.
Its the flapper.. go to your local hardware store and tell them what is going on they will sell you a replacement kit.. all you need to do is flush the toilet and turn off the valve in the back so it doesn't refill. Then follow the directions. Open the valve and your back in business again!! and please do replace it it really puts a strain on your water bill!!
Take the lid off the back of the tank and check the plopper.
That is the rubber stopper that opens and closes to let the water into the tank. It may be getting stuck and letting water run out, which would explain the constant running. It may also need to be replaced if it is old. Check that and it may just solve your problem.
This is what you need. If you leave it not repaired, you will have a really high water bill if you are a home owner.

Excuse the lack of terminology. But if you take the lid off the back of the tank and the ball thingy isn't floating in water, then check the valve thing at the bottom of the tank. It may not be closing right. Sorry if this doesn't help.
the seal on the flapper is bad and leaking a small amout of water. When the level gets too low the tank refills. You can spray some PB blaster around the seal to soften it (if it is a slight leak) Or replace the flapper (Usually less than $5 at the hardware store)
The big rubber flapper valve is leaking water slowly so that eventually, the float valve opens up and refills the tank. These rubber valves are notorios for failing..particularly if you use the toiltet bowl tablets. These tablets promote rapid deteroration of the rubber because they produce a mild bleach solution.

Replace the flapper valve and it should stop the leak.
you have a bad seal.

At the bottom of the tank is a rubber plug that opens when you flush, and it should close when its done flushing and starts refilling, this plug is not sealing properly so water is slowly leaking from the tank to the bowl, so every few minutes the water level has droped far enough to trigger the switch that turns on the water flow to refil the tank

Either the plug is bad or there is a crack or chip in the tank, if its the plug, you can replace it (parts at any home improvement store) if there is a chip in the porcelin tank, you will need to replace the toilet or fix the chip/crack with some apoxy
turn off the water supply behind the toilet tank (turn rightey-tightey) take off the tank lid and place it somewhere nobody's gonna drop/crack/step on/ break it. water will drain out, but pull up the little flap at the bottom of the tank (rubber circle) check it for tears, nicks, etc. that would let water through. if it's damaged, go to home/hardware store for new one, bring old one with you for best replacement option. if not damamged, it's not sitting on the porcelain right. place flap squarely on porcelain, and make sure the chain is long enough (at rest) to let it sit flat. if the chain is too tight/too loose, shorten/lengthen 'til it's just right and it sits normally. let water back in the tank by turning valve behind tank leftey-loosey. if the big ball-on-a-stick float ball lifts the flap back up, inspect the stick. some are newer and they have adjustment holes there you can "re" place the chain/string to make the flap flat again, stopping the leak. others are an older metal stick that you can bend up or down a little (same way you would bend a clothes hanger-be gentle not to snap it) to adjust the chain position. if none of this works, you're best off just replacing all of the tank insides, and it comes in a kit at the home/hardware stores for about $23 with a full set of easy instructions (pics included!!) it's easy-just have a little patience and make sure if you need to replace parts you keep the old pieces just-in-case, you'd rather have it leaky than not at all (if store's closed, out of parts.) you can fix it :)
you CAN fix this yourself. The new rubber piece is not expensive to buy. go for it.
Probably a sludge build up . where the water goes out of the tank and the black thing closes to keep the water in. This needs to be cleaned or replaced
