How do I hang a clock on an outside stucco wall?
Question:The clock is fairly heavy and under the stucco is a styrofoam like material. I don't want the stucco to crack and fall off the wall.
Answers:
I've hung very heavy wrought iron (window boxes, wall art, clocks and thermometers, candle holders) from my stucco exterior walls and here is how we did it. Use a masonary bit to go through the stucco to make the hole. If you are not drilling into wood (then you can just use a heavy duty screw), you will need an anchor mollie to secure the item. Get the metal type, they already have the screw in them and get one rated for the weight of the item you intend to hang. The home improvement stores carry them. They expand behind the stucco to give heavy items support. The stucco won't fall off or crack, but I always run a bead of silicone caulk around the the mollie and let it dry before hanging the item just to be certain that moisture doesn't seep in through the hole.
silicone adhesive (caulking). If not consider a decorative post or windmill to hold the clock and not the stucco wall.
This sounds like one of those light weight stuccos. The old 3 layer cement stucco is very strong and would hold it just fine.
If you have a very thin layer of stucco then you will need to locate a wall stud and put a screw into that.
3 to 4 inch screw, there is most probably some wood behind there somewhere!
