My toilet won't stop running, the flap doesn't fall down to close off the tank so it can fill. What can I do?

Question:

Answers:
Is the chain that pulls it up so short (or kinked or tangled) that it is keeping the flapper up? If so replace or straighten the chain.

If the flapper is just old and lost its rubberiness and gained stickiness, then replace it (and get the chain free at the same time.)

The flappers are universal sized and should fit everywhere. They just take a few minutes to take off the old and put in the new (with the water shut off). While you are in the tank there wipe down the place the flapper touches in case it has grit or lime there keeping the flapper from making a good seal.

replace flapper
get a new flapper for the crapper
Check the chain..is it getting caught on something?
If not just replace the insides...the come in sets and are very easy to do...
Goo dluck
flapper kits are very cheap. about 8 bucks. includes the handle, the chain and the flapper. only takes about five minutes to change it out. very, very simple. good luck
Chlorine in most city water tends to destroy the rubber
found in most toilet fixtures. Go to your local hardware store and buy a new flapper installation kit. They're usually under $10. But before you do, visually check the other fittings and inner workings. If it looks discolored (brown/black/rusty) replace them too. Make sure you turn the water off to the tank and drain it before you do anything. It'll take about 10-15 minutes to do the job.
If it does not fall down ,check the chain for the correct length, but I would change the whole thing,to prevent the slow leak that will develop.
i had the same problem , i bought a toilet repair kit at a local hardware store & replaced everything inside the tank ... it was aprox $20.00 & not very complicated...
Replacing the flapper is easy and cheap. It should cost less than $5.00. Turn off the water supply at the bse of the tank, flush the potty and when drained pull off the old flapper and install the new. They come with instructions and takes about 5-10 minutes.
take off the lid on the tank and flip the flapper over by hand, first. Watch it fill.
Now, with the lid off, make a regular flush and watch what happens inside the tank. See the chain (or cable) that connects the flush handle with the flapper? You need to make it longer so it doesn't lift the flapper so high. It may take you a couple of adjustment trys to get it so that the flapper stays open during the flush and flops back over the hole when the water is gone.
Thats all plumbers do. $60 please.
Check to see if the chain attached to flapper is catching on something. If not lengthen the chain a bit and see if that does it. If neither work you need a new flapper for your crapper.
