How much to pay someone to dig post holes?

Question:Code in my part of MN says that post holes for a deck must be 5' deep. Sounds crazy to me, but that's the code. I was just going to dig them myself by hand or by renting a power auger until I found out I have to go that deep. Most power augers I've seen can generally only go around 3' deep. Are there bigger augers out there to rent that go down 5'? Or around how much does it cost to hire someone to come out with something like a Bobcat & auger attachment to dig a dozen holes?

Answers:
There should definitely be bigger post hole diggers/dirt augers than just 3'. Check out equipment rental places, or a store like The Home Depot where they have a tool rental place of their own. If you don't find anything rentable (which I would be surprised), contacting a bobcat/skid steer/landscape related company or individual that does it for a living would probably be the second best thing.

5 ft deep is probably the frost line. In MA, it's 4 feet and their real picky about it when their inspecting.

You basically need to get below the frost line to prevent what are known as frost heaves where the freezing and thawing of the ground can force posts up out of the ground and destroy your (whatever).

How much does it cost? How much is milk there? is it more expenseve than here?

Call around for estimates.
look in your yellow pages - maybe for one of those guys with the jeep mounted auger - may be cheaper. that depth does sound extreme. augers come in all sizes !! however if you know any cranksters i'm sure they would dig it for free ( i understand cranksters have a thing for digging)
I used to do that kind of work but the harder I worked the further I got in the hole.
If you have a Home Depot by you with a tool rental center look into a rental auger called a Dingo,This machine comes in 2 sizes and usually has all the extensions to reach the depth you need,it might run you as much as 225.00 per day or you take your chances at finding someone that will dig all the holes to code for less than the rental.Good Luck!!
It all depends on how many holes. Backhoe people in Maryland want $300.00 just for round trip fee. I would guese about $75.00 to $100.00 per hole, it depends on the land too - Hilly, rocky and soil conditions. My holes were augered to 40Inches. If you can get a South of the Border folk to do it , pay him $7 to $8.00 per hour & provide water & lunch.
5 ft thats crazy its 3ft in most areas
