Drilling holes...?
Question:we have a cable wire end that won't fit into a hole, how can we drill the hole to make it bigger with out damaging the end of the wire? we only have basic tools... any advice would be helpful, thanks (It costs 80 bucks for the installation people to come and do it and as most people know we are not all made out of money)
Answers:
got a hammer? got a flat blade screwdriver? use it like a chisel to make hole bigger. no reason it has to be round.
Have you tried going to Radio Shack to see if ther is some kind of adapter you could use?
Well, to drill a hole, use a drill
If you have an awl or small diameter icepick, you can use that to increase the diameter of a hole in plastic or aluminum fairly easily. Just push it into the hole and twist back and forth. If the hole is in thin steel, it might take a bit more force and work, but that should work too. In thick steel, you need an electric drill.
The only thing I can think of is a dry wall saw. Its pretty small and it is somewhat inexpensive...this one is $10.86

this should work..or if you have a strong sturdy knife that would work too. Just poke it into the wall near the hole and cut around where the wire should go. Good luck.
If its a coaxal cable end - for cable TV - remove the end , slip through hole and replace the end. Though generally a crimper is needed. (about $30 and only good for this specific job and/or wire crimping in the furture - I dont think you have that need)
If its a fixed wire end - you need a drill. A cheap one goes for about $25, so you are saving money and can use it for future use.
But, what kind of floor? wood? concrete?tile? I like the one where he said take the end off. How about this , if the cable itself fits but not the connector, cut it off, send it thru and for 5 bucks buy a connector (f style) that screws on. you just force the cable into it. if its a crimping type use a plier to squeeze the end. As for a bigger hole , rent a drill, borrow one ,get the right size bit and drill away. And your avatar is cute.
You can enlarge the hole with a variety of things:
Measure the wire thickness and measure the hole diameter, and drill the hole to the diameter of the wire.
Or, you can get a rat tail file and file it out - but that is a PITA.
And teh one man who answered thought the connector might be on the wire, that can be removed, but it might be hard to put back on, if you don't want to mess with that, measure the diameter of that and drill a hole so that it can be fed through.
Drill a hole beside the cable hole close enough that you can break thru into the smaller hole. Make sure the hole you drill is big enough for the cable end to pass thru or can you remove the cable end pull the wire out drill it bigger then re-install a new cable connector on the cable. You can buy them at Home Depot or an elcetronics store.
you can use a long drill bit and drill a larger hole just to one side so that the outer edge of the new hole just cuts into the outer edge of the old hole . or you can buy a drill bit extension and a rotozip blade ( like a small drill bit) any hardware store can sell you one. then just pull the cable wire to the side and slip the rotozip blade into the other side and enlarge the hole that way . either way should cost you under 10.00 if you have a drill.
Ok If this is a cable TV wire..I would cut the end off the cable, then pull the cable out of the hole so I could enlarge the hole with a drill. Get a new connector from Radio Shack or a hardware store and put it back on.
