Hook up a thermostat?

Question:

Answers:
If you look closely at where the wires go, (the screws) it has letters that match up to the different color wires.

YES, go ahead. you can do it.
There are two basic types of thermostats. The first is called a line voltage. The second is a millivolt system. It is important that you know the difference because you will short a millivolt thermostat instantly if you put it in a line voltage system. Look at the guage of your wire. This will tell you witch one you have. Another clue is that most newer millivolt systems will run off a battery. These system send a signal to the system to turn on and off (heat and ac) they usually consist of a three to 4 wire hook up depending on if you have a/c or not. the wiring diagram that is included will detail how to connect. Millivolt systems are easy to hook up because the wires are very thin guage and they run on no more than 24 volts. Not much danger of anything happening. Line voltage systems run on 220v of electricity. You will find heavy gauge wires in the wall. This type of thermostat is usually associated with heat pumps or base board style heat systems. Be careful with this type of a system, and consider calling a professional for service.
Idiot proof. if just heat, you have 2 wires, red and white. all new thermostats are color coded. If the wires comming out of wall are not colored then try one way first if nothing happens switch them.
