Oiling/waxing a floor and staining/dyeing?

Question:I'm sanding a floor this weekend and I want to oil/wax it. As it's not the colour I want, can I apply staining first? What's the difference between stain/dye? Would stain stop the absorbsion of the oil or wax? And what's the difference between oiling and waxing (and wax oil) ? I don't want to varnish. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Answers:
Stain will tend to seal the wood, the more coats you apply, the more it will seal. Dye would solely colour the wood. Oil/wax would be absorbed less with stain, more with dye. "Danish oil" I have used extensively on bare wood, it dries like varish, but a semi matt finish if one or two coats are applied, and it doesn't peel like varnish. Danish oil, or wax, both very natural, and nice, either can be recoated ok.
