Do we need to thin our cherry tree?
Question:we have a pretty tall cherry tree that gives off TONS of cherries but not all of them are sweet. Can we thin it or do we need to thin it?.to make them sweeter?
Answers:
it's up to you...which one you feel better..
probably do not anything to the cherry tree..
Hmm no I never heard of doing this. You want to protect the cherrys from the wild birds who will thin it for you. We had 7 cherry trees and not one complaint on cherrys not being sweet enough. Some cherrys are sour like the bright red ones and some are sweet like th purple ones.
Wait until late fall to prune it.
You may have sour ground or what ever but if you thin it the growth will be stimulated.
Call your local college or agricultural dept and ask.
Ask if they recommend fruit fertilizer a pack in walmart is only about 1.69 to
1.99 for about 4 to 6 sizeable spikes
you pound into the ground and water. Check first.
Sounds as if you've got some suckers growing . Is it a 3-in-1 tree , or similar ?If so could be sweet cherry branches grafted onto a sour cherry trunk Any new branches (suckers) coming directly off the trunk would be sour. Some growers produce trees with both sweet & sour varieties grafted onto same tree . (So you can get some for pies, & some for straight eating on 1 tree) Anything coming up from below the graft .? Most cherries are grafted on a different kind of cherry rootstock , so the cherries from the rootstock will be different. Pay attention to which branches are which, & prune trhem out, if they are suckers .
