Building a ramp?
Question:i want to build a straight ramp off 2 wooden steps out the back door to the patio so my dog can get up into the house easier. top step is about 2 feet higher than patio level. also maybe adding a handrail for people use
Answers:
check out the ADA requirements for a ramp. I realize this is for a dog but if it's to be permanent it may as well comply. I believe it needs to be 2in12( 2in" rise for every 12" of run), which would make your ramp about 12' long. (not sure that's practical though).good luck
what about a piece of plywood or any board 10 inches or so in width; anchored w/ 2 screws; so to attach the top of the board to the top of the step, (im assuming your steps are wooden, as well, however) make sure the board is long enough to reach the patio ground. it'll be cheap and removable, and off to the side.
first off if this is going to be permanent i would take out the steps then figure out how far you want the ramp to rest on the patio run you will wanna use 2x6s for longevity and no sag they make hanger brackets that have diff angels to them you could use them or once you fig your angle run a 2x4 under the 2x6s to rest on then tow nail them in with nails or decking screws i would use three 2x6s for strength and you could use OSB on the top but your going to have to paint it if you do when you paint it while the paint is wet throw some sand on the wet paint it will act as a grip so you wont slip if its wet or you could use decking boards too and you could still paint it or stain it and your hand rail just attach uprights out of 2x4s and cut the angle and attach a 2x4 to each side for the hand rails oh if you do use OSB and are worried it will rot you can use Marine grade it not cheap though hope this helps ya out
