I need to make a trench in a concrete floor for a drainage pipe?
Question:is an electric jackhammer my best weapon of choice?the trench only needs to be 10 feet long.how hard is it to do?
Answers:
Hire someone that does concrete cutting for a living. This is a rather daunting task for a DIYer who doesn't own all the necessary tools. You also run the risk of damaging other parts of the floor. With a job being that small you may be able to talk a guy who does this into doing it on a Saturday as a small side job(Off the books).
Yes, a pneumatic hammer requires a monster compressor. You should saw the edges before you start to avoid damaging more than you intend and to make a neat looking job. A circular saw with a diamond blade should do just fine.
I did this using a masonry blade in my circular saw. It worked okay, but created a ton of dust. I then chipped out the trench with a arge cold chisel and mallet.
I wouldn't recommend this method unless you are not concerned about dust. If not - go for it.
Or yo can use a circular saw with a concrete cutting blade and use a crow bar to "dig out" the concrete.
well you are going to have to saw a trench out the lenght and than use the JH (jack hammer) to break it up the small electric JH is not to much now those big ones are another story
Electric jack hammers can be rented, and the light weight ones (75lbs) are easy to handle.
rent a masonry saw with a 12 in blade ... you want to cut all the way through to make it easer when jack hammering...once you get a starter piece out the rest will come out easier...an electric hammer should do the trick if you cut all the way through...
I might suggest drilling the drain hole through the concrete floor which won't disturb the integrety so much. Then where will it drain to? You can run a pipe through under the concrete, that is possible, like they do with putting sprinkler pipes under cement walks.
Best bet is to buy concrete cutting blades for a circular saw. If you rent a commercial saw from a rental place you will have to buy the blade and it is very pricey!! You could buy 10 blades from Lowes/Home depot for your circular saw for what you would pay for the blade to fit the rental.
