Plumbing question -- replacing pipes under sink?

Question:My J pipe cracked -- I pulled it and got a new drop-piece piece (basin to trap), a new trap, and a new J pipe. I cut the J pipe to length, and connected everything. The only place where there is no threading is J pipe to trap. There's a 1.5 cm gap here. What can I use to clamp these together, or is there a different approach I need?

Answers:
Their are 2 ways to resolve it, either get a connector with a female thread one end. You will then be able to connect one end to the pipe and the other to the thread on you waste. The second is to just buy a flexible connector with a female thread (whatever size pipe you are using), this will work the same as the standard one but will give you more room to manover.

FYI - 32mm is a common size of pipe, usually for basins in bathrooms. 40mm is usually used for baths and kitchen sink wastes. 50mm is mainly more commercial use where the need to drain alot more water is required

You need a back to back compression connector. When you tighten it up it clamps a rubber seal around unthreaded pipework.
At my house, they used a flexible coupling, you can get them at any hardware store. Just get the size you need and it should fit right over both pipes, then just tighten with a screw driver.
32mm( 1''1/4) is an old size. 40mm and 50mm are the new current sizes. I would suggest you replace the pipe to the main sewer connection with the new larger pipe. The second option is to get through your wall and adapt with a rubber boot which has two hose clamps on it to make the two diffent pipes fit.
To aid in your purchase make sure you get "tubular" sized flex connectors, not IPS. The difference is the ID (Inside Diameter) of the flex coupling. IPS is larger and you will have leaks. Also, check with your local code department if you're even allowed to use flex couplings under your sink. Some areas forbid their use. You'll need 1-1/4" ID flex coupling, It may also say "1-3/8 CTS" on the package. Hope it helps.
