Can I install Laminate Flooring over thin glued carpet?
Question:We took up the regular carpet and there is very thin glued down carpet, can this be used as underlayment or do we scrape it up?
Answers:
No, you have to remove the carpet & either strip the glue, or even better, put down a new sub floor.
For what you want to do a 1/4" plywood subfloor would work, just glue it & screw it to the existing sub floor.EITHER WAY THE CARPET HAS TO BE REMOVED FIRST!!
Hope this helped, good luck!!
U have to scrape all the pieces of the carpet off before installing a new flooring. if the dirt or pieces of thin carpets is not removed, the laminated floor could have some bumps in it. also, it could make the job of installing a bit harder.
Yes you can but.
Rememeber that if the carpet is uneven so will your new floor.
It can make a great underlay for your new floor
I highly recommend that you go to your local home improvement center and buy an illustrated book on installing flooring.
the answer is NO
You can, my dad insisted I do it when installing his laminate floor. Problem is that a year later the floor is so soft and flexes so much that the boards are seperating and/or cracking. And his carpet was just barely thicker than Astroturf type stuff.
As long as it is a very thin, dense carpet like a commercial level loop, and it is glued down very well you can do it. Another thing to look for is make sure it is a click floor, not one that the seams need to be glued. I have done it a few times for customers and has always turned out nice.
The best thing for laminate flooring is to remove all the older flooring.
Laminate flooring must have very smooth surface so that it adheres correctly. You may even consider sanding th sub flooring or installing some well sanded 1/4" plywood.
you need to take it up. but if it really stuck cut the carpet in small strips(around 6inches) smaller if still hard to get up
remove it or you will be wasting your money when you remove carpet and tile so do it right the first time.
