Help! I have a wiring issue!?
Question:I installed 5 recessed lights in a ceiling, which went relatively well. At the existing junction box prior to installing the lights was a ceiling fan, which I removed. There is one hot wire leading to the junction box from the breaker box. My problem is, I want to install a wall switch to handle the five lights. I now have five wires which I ran through the ceiling from each light that are at the junction box, and the hot wire. My question is, precisely how and where do I begin to run a wire to the switch that I plan on installing in the wall so that it will control all the lights? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Answers:
In your previous installation, the fan was wired hot instead of the switch. You need to run the hot wire down to the switch with the return coming back to the junction box. From the junction box you can go to each light separately.
you could have inline wired your lights so you have only one coming back to your junction box but all lights wired in conjunction with each other. run a wire from switch box to junction box.tie junction box black wire to black wire going to switch, then connect white switch wire to black wire going to run of lights.all white wires in light run should be tied together with the white wire in junction box then tie all ground wires together and you should be set.
By code here you have too many wires insdie that octogon box. We can only have 4 pair unless you use a deep one. Right off the start you have a fire hazzard. You'll have to use the red marrettes to hold them all, if they'll fit.
You need to run one set of 14/2 wire for your switch. The black one will connect to your black/hot wire coming from the panelbox. The white will connect to all the blacks going to your lights. All the whites from the light fixtures will be together as well as the neutral from the panelbox. The other end of your new wire will attack to the switch in any way you want.
