Is it a good idea to get an attic conversion?

Question:My room is absolutely tiny.So I really want to move into the attic. But my attic has no windows and there are gaps in the floorboards. Is it a good idea to get an attic conversion,or will it be to expensive?
B.T.W. An attic conversion is where you turn and attic into a room!(Just incase you didn't know!) ;-)
Thanks!

For building permits, and also for safety's sake, you need a fire escape - either a roof window (a skylight that opens wide) or a dormer window. Lots of people are doing it. If you do it right, it will add value to your home, as well as enjoyment.
Best wishes for a successful project.

First thing to do would be talk to more than one local builder and find out how to arrange the necessary permits, and how expensive those are going to be. Have the builders come in and give you a no-obligation quote for the work. Talk to a local realtor and find out what the difference in house prices would be for selling later on if you did the work, as opposed to leaving it like it is. I am assuming you own here, otherwise it would not be feasible at all! If the quotes from the builders are something you can financially handle, and the realtor (or realtors, again might be good to get a couple of estimates) thinks that your house would have enough added value to justify converting, then go for it! It's nice to have a spacious and light room, really good for the mind and body! Just make sure you add dark drapes so you get enough sleep! :)
the problem with this is your house is usually proportionate to your property and existing structure, by adding up you usually add more people space, but your overall living space, kitchen, bath, living room, etc, was designed to accommodate the amount of people that would fit the structure as built. it might work for u, but could make the house hard to sell in a tight market
If your moving up there a good idea would be to put a window in there, replacing old/missing floorboards isnt too expensive, in the long run its worth it, it adds extra room to your home, if you ever need to seel it a house with more room will sell for more, so your garanteed to get your money back, at least, and like you said, your room is tiny, go onward and upwards, work out the costs of what u need, broswe the home depot stors and do a bit at a time, go on you know you want to!
