How do you convert a 55 gallon drum into a BBQ-smoker?

Question:any plans or information would be helpful.

Answers:
Not recommended. If you are set on doing it, I would cut a low door for accessing the fire, and drilling holes to put rods through to hold your grates. You will also need a way of getting to the food to check it, as well as a water pan above the flame. It is much easier to buy a good unit. They start at $35

Not easy but doable. Cut the drum in halves the long way, top to bottom. Then choose one half as the bottom and weld 4legs to it. Put on one cross brace in each direction, left to right and front to back. Weld or screw hinges to the back of both top and bottom. Weld or screw a handle to front of top. Make two grates by welding or buying, one sits about 2" up from the bottom and one that sits on top of the bottom. The lower is for charcoal, the top for grilling.
uhh thats a task and a half

First tie a string around it so that it goes from top to bottom, Then chalk a line that is at the mid point.
Now you need a saw with a metal cutting blade.
You can use a circular saw or a hand held jig saw.
I'm thinking the jig saw would be best. You will probably dull the blade before you're through so have a couple spares.
When you have it in two pieces hinge it with 3 regular door hinges by drilling the holes and bolting the hinge.
If you can use stainless steel bolts you'll have a long lasting set up. Or use galvanized bolts NOT zinc plated. Hot dipped galvanized is what I'm talking about.
