How much to charge?

Question:I've been learning how to reupholster for the past few months hoping that I can start charging and make a bit of spare cash- My friend wants me to reupholster her chair- I've told her that I'm still learning but am good enough where I could give it a go. Any idea how much I should charge? I was thinking $50-100 but don't want to over or under charge...

Answers:
Just do for free and tell her if she wants to give you some money you'll take all she wants to give. you never she might just give you something better dont worry about the money just do your best the money will come. it works for me.

Call a reupholster shop in your area and ask them how they charge.
If it's a freind and they suppy the supplies and it's your labor figure out how many hours it will take then decide how much you want to charge per hour. Since its a freind you will want to give them a good deal maybe even have them help you.
The most objective way is to make a proper and simple costing of your materials and labor applied as well as your desired mark-up, if not inlcluded in your labor. You cant always compare your price to those with shops who have already established their business. Because other factors were involved, eg rent, utilities, while you might be using your own place in doing your stuff.
You can't under charge if it's a friend and you're still learning. Just make sure they understand this, and that it's not your going rate. Otherwise, you'll be redoing all their furniture for that price.
Tell it it will be time and material and charge $35 an hr for the labor.
My two cents; good reupholsters are rare and worht almost whatever they charge. Cover your materials and a decent rate for your srevice while still learning. If you get really good you can almost charge whatever you want. Look into redoing auto interiors also. Big bucks in that.
GOOD LUCK!
Find out what the going rate is and charge a friend half. This starts to put some money in your pocket or have them take you out for dinner. If that friendly. It is better to be cheap with friends than to lose them for money. Some friends can start to take advantage of you so be careful. Find out what the going rate is and beat that price so if they ever go for an estimate from another person you will surly be less and fair. Tell them the going rate and then what you are going to do it for. If your friend then gets angry then they were only out to take advantage of you.
well when in doubt you have to make at least 15 bux an hour maybe 20 this is a skilled craft you have
The best way to charge for any service is time spent, material, and supplies. If you are going to start make up a contract always because the public can say anything cover your bases at all times.I have a cleaning company they pay for a service they dont want to do themselves.I know my work I know what I am worth.People always want something for nothing. You are doing a job that would cost them alot more if they took it to someone whos been in the buisness for years. My advice go by time spent say $25 per hour plus materials.Dont rush to save friends money be proud of your work and make sure your work represents you.Word of mouth will bring you buisness not the money. For a job done beautifully they arent worried about the money.Good luck.
