How should I decorate my apartment?
Question:My best friend and I are 18 and we're moving out for the first time. We want a bright, chaotic look, we love bright colors. But we can't think of any ideas besides big pillows. And we can't really paint on the walls or put up wall paper because we're moving into an apartment. What are some cheap ways to make it our own.
Answers:
make screens. with frames and fabric to move around put up against walls etc.
get an old window and mount it randomly on the wall to add character
a very LARGE vase with nuetral colored stalks on the floor somewhere
use placemates as window treatments.
go to ikea and check it out.
paint a large painteing canvas in a favorite color or two or three and mount on wall bigger is better
. buy great towels for bathroom liike all white and keep that room simple like a hotel.
add candles and enjoy
and hey be careful you are young and make sure you stay SAFE becasue you never know and you dont really KNOW someone until you live with them so be prepared to move out or have him leave if its not great
fill it with objects that each of you love. statues, flowers, picures. anythig that u like. welcome to the world of choice!
Check with the apartment manager about painting your walls because I think you can with the stipulation that you repaint before you move out. Every place is different but check it out.
If not then watch HGTV or visit http://www.hgtv.com/ to get some really inexpensive ideas to brighten up your decor. Have fun!
Floor rugs can really make a difference. One thing that is popular and I have done it in my house which looks great it purchase.Very large color plates and hang them on the wall. Sounds weird and tacky but it really looks amazing. Not a lot of them just 3-4.
I have a great runway rug with 3 plates hanging downwards in the walk area when u first come in my door. Everyone says...wow, I love it!
Congrats on your new place!! its exciting being that age. I'm 24 and I still wish I could be that age again.
Paint the walls whatever you want. Hence, that is what your deposit is for. When you move out, you just won't get your deposit back. Which, in my opinion will never be given back to you, regardless. Or repaint the walls back to the original color when you move out in hopes to get your security deposit back.
Well, you can mix and match colors with brightly colored fabric curtains and fabric valences above windows, and if you've got a sofa or futon and would like to add color, get a slip cover for it. Better yet: (and, more cheapy!) get a king-sized flat sheet that you like and cover the sofa and cushions with it (you will have to tuck it in from time to time, but it'll be easier to wash than a slip cover).
The most fun: You could get a false tree or plant and put colored and/or shaped holday mini-lights through the leaves and branches (make sure to get the mini-lights; the big, old fashioned ones get hot!). I like the lit-up fake tree thing because if you do it right, it looks classy, *and* if you use white, pink or yellow lights this is just enough light for watching a movie with a date or significant other...as flattering as candle-light, but without the flame/looking like you tried too hard :) You also get to use holiday lights for decoration without looking like a little kid.
A good way to find a color scheme is to find on item (like a floor rug) whose design and colors you really love, and stick with the colors and patterns in it throughout the room.
Get colored cloth napkins or handkerchiefs (or cheap table runners if you can find them!) to put ontop of any endtables or coffee tables. Brightly colored lampshades can be fun and inexpensive, too.
It will take time to achieve the look you want: only include things you really love, or you'll end up replacing them for additional $!
Good luck with your new place, and most of all - have fun!
Forget the walls regarding to painting - - walls in an apartment don't make it you. Go to Salvation Army, Goodwill, rummage sales, Flea Markets and look for the you stuff. Floor standing objects (statue, plant, etc...) , area rug, etc... Get 2nd hand lamp & shades - - use your imagination on decorating the shades with fabric, markers, paint or glue decorations on it. - - - most important, go together & laugh a lot.
