How to sand stairs?

Question:I am sanding the stairs in my house. I am having trouble getting between the bars, what is an easy and inexpensive way to do so?

Answers:
I take it you mean the Uprights which hold the Handrail?
Firstly, I presume that you are sandpapering a previous painted surface; what I would do is remove it with paint/varnish stripper (Take care, read instructions). If this is not applicable, buy Mangers Sugar Soap (take care, read instructions. Thirdly, If you want to make a good job of it and the other two suggestions are not appropriate then you will have to use the sandpaper. You are obviously finding it a bit of a bore and searching for a quick fix. Don't go there. Set about a good job. What sort of sandpaper are you using? there a different grades - if you use ones that are too coarse you will end up with scratches which will show through the finished job. Clearly a medium grade is best. When we use the expression "sandpaper" we might mean anything abrasive - it is better to use "aluminium oxide" paper because it doesn't clog like real sandpaper. If this is a little difficult to understand go to a decent Hardware shop and say what I have said.
Heed the advice of the previous subscriber because its true.

Make yourself a sanding block that just fits out of a piece of scrap wood and thumbtack the sandpaper to it.
if you need to get into the round spaces, just use sandpaper in your hand. If necessary, you can make a tube out of it, which is still pretty strong. You can also use few layers.
Invest in a detail sander with a triangular head. You'll finish much faster than by hand and I'll bet you find plenty of other uses for this tool.
