Redwood decks - # of screws per joist?
Question:I am building a redwood deck. Should I use one or two screws in the middle of the 2x6 deck boards per joist? Something I read said to use one to prevent splitting. I have always used two.
If I use one, will the deck boards "cup" after a season or two of rain?
Answers:
According to California Redwood Association, use only 1 screw per joist. Install the screw about 1" in from the edge of the 2x4 or 2x6 deck board, and stagger the pattern from side to side as you screw the deck board to each joist. Predrill the holes in the deck boards, and drive the heads flush with the surface of the deckboard. No need to countersink.
Fasteners should be stainless steel, aluminum or HDG (hot dipped galvanized) steel. Do not use EG (electrogalvanized) nails or screws, because the zinc coating is very thin and won't provide long lasting corrosion protection.

use 2 screw to prevent splitting and use stainless or brass to prevent the screws from rusting and breaking.
Always treat the wood with a water seal to keep the wood looking new and maximize longevity
