5 years ago, my bike got stolen, and lo and behold, a few days ago we find it locked up to a sign in front of?

Question:locked up in front of my house. We called the police but technically they couldnt do anything since we didnt have the serial number. So we locked it up too so they couldnt get back, and left our number to call. They call us and we expain that it was stolen and they pretty much hung up and have yet to try to retrieve it. So basicaly its stuck with a U kyptonite lock and im trying to figure out how i can get this thing off?

Answers:
Just unbolt the sign and lift the bike over the top. Don't forget to put the sign back up.

that story doesnt even make sense...thats stupid
Call the police first! If you don't have a registered police complaint with a description of the bike, or a store receipt, or photo or other evidence that the bike is yours, then you WILL be charged with theft, if you're seen trying to defeat the lock.
Also, please DO be sure that it IS your bike. (any unique marks that a similar model would not have).
If you DO have a police report from 5 years ago, call the police and they WILL get it unlocked for you.
If you don't, I would tell them your story and see if they will assist you.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GET THE BIKE YOURSELF WITHOUT CHECKING WITH YOUR LOCAL POLICE!
bolt cutters...
If it's been 5 years, how can you be sure that this is actually your bike?
If it's abandoned on your property, it's yours again.

The lock is defeated by hacksaw or locksmith.
Call a locksmith?? Good luck.
First of all I'd have to say you've experienced KARMA at its best.

As one other suggests Bolt Cutters or anything that will get through either the lock, or chain, or whatever is holding it.

The fact that you have no receipts, or proof of ownership seems a Moot point at this point, and I'm confused about why you'd report a returned bike? You probably realize however that bike theft is a rampant disease, but not very high on a Police Dept. priority list.

The other confusing thing is why would a thief bother to risk bringing the bike back to where it was likely stolen from, then waste a lock?

I'd do what I had to, in order to remove the lock, retrieve the bike, and put it away. No real offense but not even knowing the original cost,,, 5 years is a long time not only for a bike to mature, but our species as well.

Certainly in the dead of night you could take out the sign and drag the bike off, but if caught you have two first degree misdomeaners to explain.

BTW Kryptonite is a substance created only to foil Superman.
Yea Bolt cutters do wonders.
get some bolt cutters and go for cutting it off even if it takes you a little while to cut all the way through
It,s been FIVE YEARS ! This must be some really Special BIKE . Don,t you have a car by now ?
There is only one way to get it off without calling a locksmith. And NO bolt cutter will not cut a U lock ( Kryptonite lock ). You have to use a mini grinder with a metal cutting blade on it. It will take less than one minute to cut through. That's the only way....They make them so people running around with bolt cutters can't steal them, that's why they cost so much. See if they have mini grinder at your local equipment rental..I understand what you mean cause it's your BIKE...
I cant get over the fact that you also put a lock on the bike so that it couldnt be "restolen". This is about the craziest thing I have ever heard. I cant figure out who is the bigger idiot here, the thief who locked it up in front of the house he stole it from or you for asking how to resteal your own bike. DUH
P.S. Why does the thief have your phone number and dont you have caller I.D. I'm afraid to walk the streets with people like you on them.
This is a wild story,if the cops said do what you have to do, do it. Like one of the guys said here just take the sign off, left bike over post,(PUT) sign back, then get grinder to take off there lock, you have your (OLD) bike back..
Now what are you going to do with your car?? SALE it, How much do you want for it?
