How to measure for and construct Gambrel style rafters?
Question:
Answers:
You need to figure the total rise (ridge height) and total run (from top plate to top plate across your structure). Then add desired eave length to run total (for soffitts). Figure on a 16/12 pitch for gambrel sides, and an 8/12 for common rafters. Best prefabbed using a jig for uniformity then hoisted and set in place. Straight gable end trusses will need vertical members spaced @ 16" on center for sheathing, if hips are desired use speed square math to construct, as you may need hip jackrafters @ 16" intervals. Be sure to use plenty of 2"X4"X16' bracing, and collar ties if no bottom chord is used. Many companies will measure, construct and deliver your gambrel trusses for you, installation would be all that is required. Best of luck!
