in the UK the foundation has to be a minimum depth of 2' - 6" (900mm) from the finished floor height and the concrete has to be 2 feet wide and a minimum depth of 6" (600 wide x 150 depth )

Depends on where you live. But, I would go 16" wide and 6" deep for a single story. You will have to go bigger for two stories.
rule of thumb is as thick as the unit you are laying(8in. for 8 in. block, etc.) and twice as wide as the unit, (16 in. for 8 in. block, 20 in. for 10 in.) the footers on the school we are building now are at least 3 ft. wide. lots of foot room...
Normally it is 12'', but local regulations may differ from country to country and region to region.
Check with your council, or a concrete placer.
