Is Tyvek Waterproof?
Question:My house is wrapped in Tyvek. My mason says it is waterprroof. I always thought it was just to dry the house out for Sheetrock, not for waterproofing. I want to make sure before I have stucco installed.
Answers:
Typically tyvek is a semi-permeable membrane... that's to say it lets moisture out but not in. It's like a Gortex coat or boot. It allows your house to "breathe". Tyvek makes a product specifically to be put under stucco/brick/stone verneer. Check out this link:

I don't know about waterproof, but I beleive that it is water resistant.

You will have to have your mason check out this site. They say specifically that it is water resistant. Totally different from being water proof.
Good Luck with your stucco (we are putting in new windows & Hardi Board right now).
waterproof and windproof
DuPont® has combined the properties of paper, film, and cloth, resulting in a product they call Tyvek® HomeWrap®. Made from high-density polyethylene fibers, HomeWrap® is a weatherization membrane that resists air infiltration and water intrusion, yet is engineered to readily allow moisture vapor to diffuse through the material. The fibrous structure is engineered with microscopic pores that readily allow moisture vapor to evaporate but are so small that bulk water and air cannot penetrate. As you can see from the picture above, Tyvek® is commonly used in home building as a barrier under a home's brick, vinyl, wood, stucco, or composite siding.
