How do I go about soundproof my rooms?
Question:I am sick of hearing my neigbours argue and I'd like to know about soundproofing. How do you go about doing it and can it be done DIY or is it strictly professional only?
Answers:
There is no reason why you can't DIY. You will need to build a stud wall and pack it with high density rock wool. The low density is for thermal insulation, higher density is for sound. That's 60 - 80KG/***. Take a look at this website for more info
If you line the walls with layers of paper, any sort newspaper, magazines anything will do,then place a layer of something over the top to decorate, this will cut the noise down.. Failing that, line your walls with thick furniture..
if it is noise through walls it can be done by your self but if it is through the ceiling it might be better done by a professional.using 4 by 2 wood make a new frame along side existing wall ,fill gap with insulation then board out with soundproof 1/2'' boarding sealed all round the edging with sealer (dec. caulk) then a layer of plaster board, tape and plaster (by a plasterer) then decorate as required. enjoy the quietness !!
If it is your home, get some noise reduction blanket, batton the walls and reline.
Have a chat to the guys at the hardware store, or contact the experts to see what they recommend.
Fabric has an amazing sound muffling quality - a cheaper, easier method of reducing some sound is to fashion ceiling covering fabric coverings - uses lots of folds of fabric - also works a treat on walls.
A quick way to do it is to hang some textile or quilt on the wall.
i do the soundproofing on my site. i get issued a product called "gefricell" to lay on the slabs before the top layer of floor screed is laid. i dont know how much it costs i just get it given to me in rolls and told to lay it, im not a professional sound proofer i'm just a labourer but all the apartments ive sound proofed have passed inspection. you could easily lay it under wooden flooring or inside a stud wall without instructions. its just like rolling out lino and cutting to fit. but i have to do it to spec really that means covering above skirting board level.
For a simple solution, you can add sound to make your quarters quieter. Might sound stupid, but it works. You need a pink noise (you could probably use white noise) generator, an amplifier (not strong, perhaps not even 10 watts) and attach that to the speaker then turn it to a tolerable level. That will produce a low level hissing sound in your quarters, but you will grow immune to it.
