How do you get rid of squirrels in your walls?
Question:We live in the lower half of a house & we have a terrible squirrel problem. They are scurring in the walls all the time & we have even seen them in the basement. The landlord won't do anything. I'm worried they'll get inside the house or short our electrical system out. How do we get rid of them?
Answers:
Most exterminators won't mess with squirrels...at least the ones I've used won't. If you have a farm store or a Do-It-Yourself" pest control around.get some red fox urine. If you can locate a point of entry, drip some around that area .It "will" work. I have 12 rent houses with squirrel problems in the attics. I use the urine all the time. They leave and won't come back.
you can try to locate the openings they are using and cover them with a mesh wiring or chicken wire.
Contact a pest control company to get rid of them before they take over. The landlord should pay for it.
Wondering how to get rid of squirrels? There is no magic spray or device that you can use to make them go away. Some people try to sell predator urine, such as coyote or fox urine to get rid of squirrels, but that doesn't work. They also try to sell ultrasonic sound emitters. These devices are worthless at eliminating squirrels. Some old wive's tales recommend the use of mothballs or ammonia-soaked rags to make them leave, but I've been to countless homes where these techniques failed - biologists know that these attempts won't work. The ONE AND ONLY WAY to take care of your problem is with trapping and removal of the animals. i had the same problem way back when. I'm sory that i don't rembr how we got rid of them except that i bang on the wall to scare them. but let me tell u what u can do if u know where the entrance is that they r getting in. wire mesh... like chicken wire w/ those wire mesh like dobie pads... yep... gram secret... We did it & it worked. They won't chew thru that b/c of the texture.
As far as u'r landload. hold back u'r rent til he does something. & meanwhile ck. in u'r area for "tenants laws". I'm sorry, that's a "health hasard". Also call the Health Dept. Mayb if they sent out someone & a letter , he would get his "booty" in gear.
You need to know how they get in and out. The access holes will need to be sealed up. You don't want to seal the holes up with squrrels inside the house or walls! They die and stink! Bait a trap with peanut butter and catch them when they come out, put traps near access holes. Once you trap the critters you can't take them to a nice park, it's usually against the law, you will have to dispose of them. Animal control might be able to offer advice. Your landlord should be concerned, they eat into wires and can cause shorts and fires, they can also zap themseles and it's often difficult to find a fried squirrel in a wall to remove it.
