Just be aware that there are different types of wainscot, which call for different brushes. Beadboard wainscoting is a tongue and groove type and a brush that will hit all the grooves is key.

Make sure it is clean, dry and free of any grease/etc. Make sure you have a very skinny brush to get into the grooves, because when it is humid and the wood swells, you don't want the old color showing. That is why on a new installation, you paint at least one coat on before putting the boards up. Paint from the top down. Use a brush, not a roller, unless you want to have lines with no paint in them!

Yes, BUT if it is an older house and likely to have oil based paint on it already, then you will need to kilz it first or repaint with another oil based paint. Latex paint will not stick directly to something that is already painted with oil based paint.
Just wanted to point that out before you painted all of it and then a few days later it started peeling off.
