We have a window air conditioning unit that turns on by itself, even when we have turned the power off?

Question:This is a 2 year old Sears air conditioner plugged into a 220 outet. We turn it off at night and it is running every morning! It's not on a timer - we checked that. What could it be? Some surge in the electric line maybe/

Answers:
I assume that this is one of those units with the remote control? Sometimes the sensor can go loopy and turn the unit on without any use of the remote. If you really want it off, I would suggest unplugging it after turning it off. If it plugs itself back in and is running in the morning, then you have a whole different set of problems ;-)

mm could be freddy kruguer
It's posessed. I recommend an exorcism.

Maybe try to unplug it at night??
check the house for sleepwalkers!!
It has a thermostat in it that might be shorted. I am surprised its a 220 ac unit that goes in a window. They don't usually come 220
It is time to move You have gooiest in the house .
sounds like you have a short in the on / off switch. If you don't want to put any money into the unit. I would say when the switch is off, unplug the unit.
If it is actually blowing cold air you might have a miraculous energy saving product there.

If just the fan is rotating it might be a breeze from outside turning it.

Most likely you have a defective switch. Try unplugging it at night and then check it again in the AM. That would point to the switch as the problem.
