How to lay hardwood floors?

Question:

Answers:
Need to lay over 3/4" subflooring so you have something to nail to, if laying over slab- need to install 3/4" pressure treated plywood. measure and mark floor joist locations, then lay felt or rosin paper and transfer joist location marks, pop chalk line on these marks. start by face nailing first piece, grooved edge TOWARDS the wall, then angle (blind) nail remaining field pieces into joists and every 8"-10" thereafter. use a rubber mallet to tap pieces into place. best to rent a flooring nailer, about $35 to $40 a day @ rental centers, 2" nails @ $20 per box. leave 1/4"-3/8" gaps at walls for expansion (base trim will cover these gaps). use joist chalk lines to ensure flooring is square to room. transitions are a matter of choice, flooring supply houses and home depot/lowe's have good selections. good luck!
