I had this problem in my last apartment. Here's what I did...I painted my walls a taupe color, very light and airy but not cream. Then I bought a poster from allposters.com which was framed with bamboo. The picture itself was windows that were open looking out into the bright blue ocean with a palm tree. It made the whole wall open up. My shower curtain was white linen and all my accessories were brushed nickel. Put some light blue votive candles in little clear jars on your sink, possibly with sand in the bottom. And always, fluffy white towels on the towel rack! Good luck! Happy decorating!
Paint it white with an accent color, and use mirrors.
You could take out the tub and replace it with a large shower.

I have used one of the new glass vanities in a small bathroom with soft blue walls to reflect light and brighten the space. The effect was amazing!
If you have a shower, remove curtain and replace with a glass door. This will also open up the room.
Make sure that you have enough lighting to complete the effect.
