How do I clear a french drain.?
Question:I have a french drain in my back yard. I do not believe it goes to anywere. I think its just a deep hole with a drain over it. It drains very slowly now. Any ideas on how to clear it?
Answers:
French is right...They can get clogged with sediment, soil, or organic debris (leaves). The only solution is to dig it out, clean the rocks, and replace. This time try lining the pit with a couple of layers of good landscape fabric, and cover the top with it also. This will ensure you don't have to re-do it for a long, long time.
Keep the area above the drain clear of debris, or anything which could migrate into the drain.
with a french stick
with a french drain cleaner
Put some frogs innit!
If you have had a lot of rain recently, the pit below the surface of the ground could be full and taking it's time to naturally soak into the earth.
The other thing it could be is pit has become full of sediment. If that's the case you will have to dig the pit out and redo the hole thing again.
I have a very basic French drain in my front yard that I have to redo every couple of years. I cant dig it any deeper because of sandstone rock below the surface.

throw some hot oil in it and call it a french fry cooker
Those french drains can work but maybe its time to find a way to put in regular drain pipe and divert it to a street or something. (if thats legal in your area.) Beats having to clean it out. Talk with a landscaper for options.
